Structural Health Monitoring solutions for Tunnels

Tunnel Monitoring

Just like a bridge, a tunnel is a highly critical piece of infrastructure that connects two places which are otherwise hard to travel between. Tunnels naturally come with added complexity and risk, as a failure is highly dangerous and repairs can be extremely complicated and expensive due to the tunnel being under water or under ground.

If a tunnel is temporarily closed for repairs, or even worse, collapses, it can have huge cost implications for the local and global community. It is therefore essential that every entity owning a or maintaining a tunnel, ensures that the structure is continuously monitored. Doing so can save down time, and help identify beginning structural problems before they become serious problems.

Seisodin Accelerographs can monitor vibrations in tunnels

Seisodin’s Tilia-series of structural health monitoring products are ideal for monitoring vibrations in tunnels  – under water or under ground. The Tilia Accelerographs are small, rugged and waterproof, and the high-end seismic accelerometers integrated in the instrument are perfectly suited for monitoring vibrations in the structure. Additionally, the Seisodin Tilia Accelerographs can be daisy chained, with up to either 2km (1.2mi) or 20km (12mi) between each node using the integrated fiber optical transceivers (T130F and T100F), or up to 100m between each node using regular ethernet cable to transmit both data and power (T130 and T100). With a Seisodin Structural Health Monitoring System there are no extra boxes or products required, ultimately reducing both complexity and cost, while increasing reliability considerably.

Precise time source – even in tunnels

In a tunnel, getting a reliable time source can be a challenge. Usually precise timing systems in accelerographs depend on a GNSS system, which is problematic since the tunnel is under water, and the distance between the tunnel entrance and the first instrument may exceed the maximum length of a GNSS antenna cable. However, with the Tilia-series this problem is easily solved. the GNSS based Tilia PTP Grand Master can be located outside the tunnel, and with it’s integrated fiber optical transceivers it can tolerate placement up to 20km (12mi) away from the first sensor node inside the tunnel. Thanks to the intelligent timing solution built in to all Tilia-instruments, tunnels can be monitored without compromising precision.
